Green Schools Initiative

The Center for the Creation of Cooperation’s Green Schools Initiative is designed to transform public schools in Athens County in a two-phase process that reduces energy use and then supplies the remaining energy from locally generated renewable sources. In Phase One, the Center is planning and implementing energy efficiency and energy conservation programs in participating schools. In Phase Two, the Center will partner with schools to create solar gardens on school rooftops or school land, which will provide electricity for the schools.

As we have worked with community groups and school administrators, we have observed a general lack of knowledge and understanding about the energy sector and the energy transition that is occurring. Policy and regulations that profoundly affect energy use and the possibility of energy change projects such as the Green Schools Initiative are not well know or understood. To address this lack of awareness, the Center for the Creation of Cooperation created the Athens Energy Institute.
